Clara Hemphill

hemphillI am a writer, editor, and public school parent dedicated to informing other parents about New York City’s public schools. The New York Times called my three books “the most definitive guides” to the city’s schools. New York magazine called me of the 200 most “influential” New Yorkers for my work “empowering parents” as founding editor of the Insideschools.org website, a project of Advocates for Children. I am now the senior editor at the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs, a public policy research center.

As a reporter and editorial writer for New York Newsday, I shared the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. New York magazine called my writing on the homeless “worthy of Dickens.” As foreign correspondent for The Associated Press and a producer for CBS News based in Rome in the 1980s, I covered the war in Lebanon, the attempted assassination of the pope and numerous Mafia murders. My columns and op-ed pieces have appeared in The New York Times, The New York Daily News and Newsday. I live in Manhattan with my husband, Robert Snyder, and two children.
